Identity plates
The Flemish nationalist Vlaams Belang party proposed replacing the B for Belgium on new European licence plates with a W for Wallonia and a VL for Flanders. Brussels should fall under Flanders as it is historically a Flemish territory with people feeling an identity with Flanders, according to the Vlaams Belang. The new licence plates should therefore fall under community legislation rather than regional, as would other transport matters.

Someone ought to tell those guys that…
1) historically Brussels is the capital city of the Duchy of Brabant and it has been resisting against Flemish invasions since the first Flemish attempt in 1356.
2) When they come to Brussels, they should pay a visit Charles Bulls street, where people of Brussels still cherish Everad t’Serclaes’ memory, he who led the fight against the Flemish in those times.
3) According to the last opinion poll on the subject (2010), only 2% of the people in Brussels contemplate the option of being part of Flanders if Blegium splits. There is at least 5% Dutch speakers in Brussels, i.e. not even one in two among them feels “an identity with Flanders” (let alone the French speakers).
4) Whatever the 8% of Flemish (i.e. 4.5% of Belgians) who still vote for the Vlaams Belang print on their licence plates, the rest of us could not care less.
