Cementing his legacy

Brussels artist Jeroen Peters took radical action last week to block an expulsion order: he concreted his foot to the floor. The act of defiance has temporarily halted the bailiffs, although they are expected to return with cutting gear.

Peters was living in a formerly abandoned social housing building run by a public social welfare centre, which he had transformed into an art gallery. However, the centre wanted to recover the building and use it to house some families. Peters was offered another home, but he insists on remaining in the house. Although he has staved off the authorities for the moment, he still has to manage his day-to-day life: Eating, sleeping and other basic activities will prove testing as he awaits the official response.

Costly robbery

An attempted robbery of an ATM last weekend in Dinant went horribly wrong for the two perpetrators. Two men attempted to use dynamite to blow open an ATM to get to the cash, but they miscalculated the amount of explosives and  accidentally blew up the wall and were buried under the rubble. Both men died from the explosion; one at the scene of the crime, the other from a head wound at a hospital in Namur.

Belgian intimacy

The majority of Belgians have only one sexual partner to whom they are largely faithful, according to a survey carried out for Elle Belgium’s October issue. It reveals that, of the 2,000 Belgians questioned, more than 80 percent have one regular partner and on average have had between two and five sexual partners in their lifetime. Nevertheless, 12 percent of men and 11 percent of women admitted to having had more than 15 partners, while 15 percent of men and 22 percent of women have had only one partner. Around 5 percent could not recall how many partners they had had.

Ghent guzzler jailed

Restaurateurs in the city of Ghent are breathing a collective sigh of relief following the imprisonment of ‘food pirate’ Titus Clarysse, 31. Last year, the man ripped off more than 50 restaurants by running off without paying.

Train in vain

Around 40 train passengers travelling from Brussels to Ostend last week had to be driven home by taxi. The last train could not leave as its driver had technically gone off duty. Meanwhile a train pulled out of Antwerp station last week with its doors wide open. The train was heading for Essen in Germany.
