Return to Germany

A family living on a small plot of Belgium stuck in Germany has asked to have the land officially declared German. The land is a leftover from the World War One peace treaty when the land surrounding a German railway line to the Ruhr was handed to Belgium. The plot is 18 kilometres inside Germany and the Belgian postman has to make a 40km detour on his daily route to deliver to the single house.

Shot in the back

The prosecutor in a case involving a policeman who shot and killed a suspect in the back after he tried to escape a breathalyzer test asked for the officer to be let off without a jail sentence. Luc Carlier is accused of killing a Turkish national after he escaped from the police car. The prosecution agreed with the defence that Carlier had not had enough training with the gun because he didn’t like firearms and that it went off accidentally. Verdict on November 4.

Unlucky plates

The holder of the first licence plate in a new series claimed that the 001-AAA number brought him bad luck after picking up four tickets since they were introduced. He said that the unusual plates attracted the attention of police.

Councillor bags €2million

One of the main protagonists in the Charleroi city corruption scandals uncovered in recent years managed to recoup €2 million seized by the courts after an administrative mistake. Former councillor Lucien Cariat, still under investigation for corruption and fraud, had the funds released after the seizure order expired. A new seizure order on the receiving account was filed too late, as the money had already, legitimately, been moved.
